Body Fortress Protein Powder

For those who have read this blog for a while (or who see me on ObesityHelp.com) know that my primary brand of protein supplement is Body Fortress. I go through vanilla about 6 times as fast as I go through my chocolate. I also buy some strawberry, but rarely use it and one jar could last me six months or so. But yeah, I go through vanilla like crazy.

Normally I buy my Body Fortress at Walmart when I do my grocery shopping. But I noticed they raised their prices recently - at least they did at my store. It's now around $16 +tax. I've also checked Meijer and Target and see their prices are even higher than Walmart. So I went on a search to find a better price for my beloved protein powder.

Amazon to the rescue!

Yeah, yeah, yeah... I'm an Amazon shopping addict. I know. But I just love 'em so much!  Seriously! Where else can you order dry roasted edamame alongside a GoWear Fit and pick up a new book while you're at it (next purchase will be Kiss the Girl as soon as I finish reading the first Alex Cross book on my Nook). See? Isn't Amazon fabulous?!

So anyway, back to protein...

I found a GREAT deal on Body Fortress and it's an even better deal if you sign up for auto-ship. So it's a two-pack of the normal 2lbs jar for only $29.98 (free shipping). Ok, so that comes out to $15 each, not that much better of a deal than Walmart, right? But the catch is that if you sign up for auto-ship, you automatically save 15% each time you order (and still get free shipping). A 2-pack ends up being $25.48. So only $12.75 each - much better deal! And I don't even have to think about picking it up at the store or running out, because with auto-ship, it'll arrive when I need it. Let's Talk About Protein Shakes

I have a whole series of educational, research-based blog posts about protein. Here's the summary page. But not long ago I wrote this message on the OH forums as sort of a "Newbie Protein Primer" --- shorter message for each section, but links in case you want to learn more. Today's lesson will focus primarily on protein shake and why it's so important for our good health to get protein.  Enjoy!

So, let's talk about protein, shall we?

I've noticed a lot of questions in the past week or so from people who are struggling with protein intake - or looking for ideas of how to make protein shakes tastier. And yes, there's even been a fair amount of whining and bellyaching going on. So I wanted to share some information with you. Consider this a whole semester of protein education packed into a single post. Pencils ready?


UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROTEIN SUPPLEMENTS
As a general rule, we want to use Whey Isolate Protein supplements or a high quality Whey Concentrate protein - or a combo/blend of the two. We want to avoid collagen-based protein (like those 3oz test-tubes of protein - those are collagen. here's why they're bad). In rare cases, some people can not tolerate whey protein - other options for protein supplements include soy, rice and egg protein. For more details about the different types - click here.

IT'S ALL ABOUT EXPERIMENTING
There are literally thousands of different brands and flavors of protein supplements. Some taste delicious, some taste gross. But whether it's delicious or gros is completely subjective -- so what I think is great, you might think tastes like monkey butt. Therefore, asking for recommendations of "the best tasting protein" is pointless. The only way to know for sure which flavors YOU will like is to try a bunch of different flavors. And to KEEP TRYING different flavors until you find what works. Do not buy a big jar of protein powder until you know for sure you like it - that would waste a lot of money. Instead, try samples. I had to try 4 dozen different brand/flavors before I found a couple that worked for me. It took me about 4 to 6 weeks of constant experimenting. Here's a list of online and local resources for finding protein samples.

RECIPES ARE IMPORTANT
The label on the back of a jar of protein powder will tell you to mix 1 scoop of powder with 4 or 8 ounces of water. Gee, that sounds delicious, huh? How about we skip that suggestion and go straight to a more tasty approach, ok? I like to add stuff to my protein shake recipes to jazz it up a bit. Or mix the protein powder into other food-stuff to boost the protein levels. Here's a list of 25 ways to mix a single scoop of vanilla protein powder. PROTEIN IS ESSENTIAL
I had a conversation with a 5-month-post-op last night who was only getting about 20g protein a day. He was scared to eat real food. He complained that he didn't like the taste of shakes (he'd tried only 3 different brands). And he was also complaining that he was weak and had lost a lot of his muscle strength, had no energy to do anything but sit all day, always shaky and was having trouble with his balance. Can you say malnutrition? If you don't get enough protein in your diet (from food or shakes) your body will get the protein it needs by eating its own muscle. Your heart is a muscle too, remember. When I hear people say they don't like protein so they don't eat it... my response is: tough luck! You NEED protein. This is not a matter of choice. It's a matter of survival. Think of protein as medicine, it's essential. Chronic protein deficiency is a dangerous condition with a lot of very scary symptoms .. and that list of symptoms includes death. More info here. SOOOo.... drink the shake. Chug it if you have to. Hold you nose if you must. When it's a choice between malnutrition / death... or drinking a protein shake that's not entirely delicious... Drink the shake.

HOW MUCH PROTEIN?
For normal people, with normal digestive systems - they need about 50g per day. But that's based on a diet that's high in carbohydrates and low in protein (the FDA food pyramid recommends 60% carbs, 25% fat, 15% protein). But we, as RNY folks, are eating a high protein, moderate carb diet AND we malabsorb a certain amount of the maconutrients we eat. The typical nutrient balance recommendation for RNY patients is 40% protein, 35% carbs, 25% fat. And that's where the recommendation of 60-80g protein comes from.... although a more realistic recommendation is actually 80-100g protein per day. MORE RESEARCH
I find that when I understand the "WHY" behind something, I'm more apt to be compliant with a rule or guideline. I also find it fascinating to understand exactly how my body works. Like, what exactly happens inside my pouch and intestines when food enters and how is that food or nutrient used in the cells of my body? I like knowing that stuff. Maybe you don't want to know that much detail, but it's still good to think about it sometimes - just so you know why we're eating a high protein diet, for instance. Mechanics of Protein Absorption

Earlier today I responded to a question posed by a new post-op patient on the ObesityHelp.com forums about how protein is absorbed in the body.  My response turned into a super long post with a bunch of information and resources.  I wanted to save it and refer back to it later... so I'm putting it here for safe keeping (and for the joyful reading pleasure of you all - nice of me, huh?). 

Here's the original questions asked on the message board.

I am very interested in the mechanics of when, where and how is protein absorbed. For example, is protein absorbed more/easily from liquids vs. solid food containing protein? Is protein absorbed more from our new pouch vs. small intestines? Is there any relationship between the amount of protein absobed and the rule of not drinking for at least 30 minutes after meals? 

I had my RNY on 1-6-10 and have been pleased with my protein intake. I average 75-95 g per day, which includes 30 g from a liquid protein shake and the rest from solid food.  However my liquid intake is not as strong and I only get between 40-50 oz of liquids in per day.


As I reflect on my challenges to get more water in, I find myself hesitant to drink sometimes because I have the mindset of not wanting to drink at times because it will prolong when I can eat again. So I have now learned that it is not as important to wait before eating but more important to wait to drink after eating.

I was told the main reason for not drinking afterwards was that it flushes the food through the pouch and you won't feel full as long. Is this the only reason? Would it impact the amout of protein that was absorbed if I drank before the 30 minutes and possibly "washed" the food out of my pouch?

I am fascinated with learning as much as I can about the mechanics and details of my new healthy lifestyle.

And here is my VERY long winded response:

This is gonna be long so grab a cup of tea.  First let's talk quickly about the difference between micronutrients and macronutrients.

Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals from food and supplements.... along the digestive tract there are specifically assigned spots of absorption for vitamins/minerals. Here's a diagram. Because of the bypass of about 4-5 feet of our small intestine we will always malabsorb micronutrients because those bypassed spots of absorption never grow back or generate themselves in a different part of the intestines. 

Macronutrients include protein, carbs and fats -- these are the nutrients that contain calories which provide energy for the body to function on a daily basis. There is no specific spot of absorption for macros... they are absorbed all along the small intestine and to a limited extent in the large intestine (not much actually happens in the large intestine except water absorption and prep of waste). All along our intestinal tract are little finger-like tentacles called villi. Here's a picture. As food passes by these villi they grab the macronutrients from the food and directs those nutrients into the bloodstream for use by the body's cells.

Because of our shortened intestines (originally about 25' but now only 20' or so) the body is not able to absorb as many macronutrients (calories) from food because food isn't in there for as long. This is where malabsorption of calories comes into play during the first few years post-op. But the body is very very smart and will do extraordinary things to ensure it's survival. Once your body figures out that we've screwed up our digestive tract it immediately begins to repair itself. This process is called adaptation (you can read a lot of about this process in research done on cancer patients who lose portions of ther GI tract). This adaptation includes two main things.

1) the pouch begins to grow. At the time of surgery the pouch is about 1oz in size and can hold about 2-3oz of food, but as the pouch matures and grows (not stretches, but physically grows) it will reach about 6-9oz in size holding about 8-12oz of food. It will stop growing at about this size and reaches maturity about 2 years post-op.

2) the intestinal tract will grow it's own villi --- it'll become longer, stronger and will create new tentacles. Because of our new super-villi we are better able to absorb all the macronutrients from the food that brushes by... therefore also absorbing 100% of the calories we put in our mouth. This portion of the adaptation process takes anywhere rom 2 to 4 years to complete. 

Ok, on to the stomach and pouch. Before surgery our stomachs absorbed very little stuff. In fact it's primary job was to churn the food we ate until it was ready for digestion. This was also the main spot for absorbing water and a few minor minerals (copper, iodine, etc.). The water absorption thing is key... what that means to use is that our stomachs no longer have the ability to absorb water and the only other main absorption spot for water is the large intestine. This is why it is SO essential we get all 64oz of water everyday... because just like vitamins/minerals, we are malabsorbing water and it now becomes easier for us to get dehydrated. 

So the churning of food in the stomach was an important part of the whole digestive process pre-op. Food could stay in our stomach for up to 6 hours or however long it needed to be in there to be broken down enough to be released to the intestines for macro/micronutrient absorption. But now we don't have a plyoric valve to keep food in the pouch to churn -- which means the only "churning" we get is from the chewing we do in our mouths. There is a small amount of churning in the pouch, it's minimal but it's sill happening, so we can't elminate this completely from the equation, it's just greatly reduced in the pouch vs. what used to happen in our bypassed stomachs. This also means that food particles will enter the intestines not as broken down as it was pre-op so poor chewing habits can contribute to gastric upset and constipation. Chew, chew, chew!

Liquid protein vs. solid protein. Protein contained in a whey protein supplement is already in a form that the body can use immediately -- in fact it's been shown that protein supplements are fully utilized by the body's cells within 45 minutes of drinking a shake. We're getting the full benefit of this form of protein... 100%. Protein from food is also well used by the body but it's got a lot more processing to go through before the body can use the nutrients. Remember, we need to chew the protein-based food well, then when it hits the intestines it'll brush by the villi so the protein macronutrients can be grabbed as it passes, then the body can use the protein it absorbs. But remember that we've got a shorter intestine and less villi in the first couple years so we'll be malabsorbing a certain percentage of the protein from food we eat (and no, there is no known percentage of malabsorption, it's different for each person and it's different from one month to the next as the body adapts). Also consider the thermic effect of protein usage from food. Basically that means that the body uses up energy (calories) to extract the new energy (calories) from food for new uses. We burn calories to use calories. Studies show that the thermic effect may account for up to 25% of the calories we eat. (i.e.: eat 100 calories and we burn 25 calories while abssorbing those 100 - not an exact number but just an example of how the math might work). 

SOOO... what does that mean for protein? It means that right after surgery when our body needs the most protein to heal the wounds of surgery and build new cells... we need to give it the highest quality protein we can for the best possible chance of healing and cell regeneration. Therefore, protein shakes are a good thing.

We're getting to the end... promise.

Ok, drinking after meals. As we just learned there is no absorption of nutrients happening in the stomach, so that's not the reason we want food to be in the pouch for as long as possible. The whole purpose of WLS is for us to feel full on less food. And the only way to feel full is if our tummies are actually full. Most surgeons recommend waiting 30 minutes after a meal to drink again ... but the further out you get and when hunger returns you'll want to wait longer. I wait 60-90 minutes. And we know that when we add liquid to our meals that the food becomes a sloshy mess and just flows straight through the pouch. (Watch this video, it's enlightening.) So we want food to stay in the pouch for a while, not just for the full factor but also for that little bit of churning we get to aid in digestion. Remember that there are enzymes in our saliva that aid in the breakdown of food in the pouch, so letting food and enzymes live together for a while helps with digestion too.

The other big issue is that when we drink with our meals or too soon afterward we are forcing food through the stoma before it's ready. (Stoma = opening between pouch and intestines that is normally the size around as a lady's index finger.) Abusing the stoma over time can cause it to stretch. A stretched stoma is a very bad thing. In fact, it's much worse than a stretched pouch because if your stoma becomes wide open and the same size as the pouch - you've basically created a 20' stomach to pack food into. Sometimes a stretched stoma is no fault of the patient and is a result of mechanical failure. But often it's a result of drinking with meals. Protein - A single scoop of vanilla

So often I hear new WLS patients complain that they've "tried all the protein and hate them all." (And they are only 2 or 3 weeks post-op.) Unfortunately, I don't believe them. I know - that's harsh. Be honestly, if you try something once and never try it again, or never try it a different way how can you say that you hate them ALL unless you've exhausted every possible option? One example I use when replying to forum posts is how different a single scoop of vanilla protein powder can taste if only you mix it a different way each time. So I thought I'd make a list of all the ways I can think of to make a single scoop of protein into a variety of different concoctions.
  1. Mix it with water
  2. Mix it with milk
  3. Mix it with soy milk
  4. Mix it with flavored soy milk (chocolate?)
  5. Mix it with crystal light or sugar free Kool-aid
  6. Mix it with diet juice (V8 Splash!)
  7. Mix it with coffee
  8. Mix it with tea
  9. Mix it with hot cocoa
  10. Make it hot
  11. Make it cold
  12. Make it frozen (protein ice cream)
  13. Make it thick like a milk shake
  14. Make it thicker like pudding
  15. Make it thin and serve it over ice
  16. Mix in some fruit
  17. Mix it into yogurt
  18. Mix in some spices (cinnamon, chai spice)
  19. Mix in some flavored sugar free coffee syrups
  20. Mix in some sugar free pudding mix (pistachio, cheesecake, banana??)
  21. Mix it into pudding (1 sf pudding cup, 1/2 scoop protein)
  22. Mix it into oatmeal
  23. Mix it into protein bars or balls or these bars
  24. Make it aromatic (like my protein hot chai tea recipe)
  25. Use your imagine..... the sky is the limit!
The recipes are endless. Obviously I have some here on my blog, but if you do a search on Google, you'll find millions. Bodybuilders are very creative with recipes for protein shakes - you might need to adjust the ingredients to make them more WLS friendly, but at least the ideas are often unique.


And of course, there's always my "Protein Book" with a ton of recipes. So next time you are stumped for a way to mix your protein powder. Just pick something new off the list above and see how it goes. It's all a big game of experimentation -- a game that you can't give up on after the first try.

My Opinion of New Whey Protein Bullets


A lot of people swear by the New Whey Protein Bullets. But from my own research I am not thrilled with the quality of the protein it provides for WLS patients. (It's great for bodybuilders, but not for people with altered digestive systems.)

Here's what I know:

Ingredients in New Whey Protein 42g
67.4% pure deionized water, 31.5% Actinase (patent pending blend of enzymatically hydrolyzed collagenic protein isolate, whey protein isolate and casein protein isolate), less that 2% of malic acid, vitamin c,b3,b5,b2, b1, folic acid, biotin, and b12, natural flavors, sucralose, blue-1 and red 40.

As we know, the highest percentage of ingredients are listed first, with lesser amounts listed last. So we know that of that 31.5% of protein mixture the highest amount of protein would be Collagen Protein. Next is Whey Protein Isolate, then Casein Protein Isolate. Let's look at each one:

Collagen Protein:
This is the main protein of connective tissue in animals and the most abundant protein in mammals, making up about 25% of the whole-body protein content. When broken down, collagen becomes a gelatin used in many foods such as Jell-O type desserts. It’s also used in cosmetics, pharmacology and photography industry for the production of various products. Collagen and gelatin are poor-quality protein sources since they do not contain all the essential amino acids that the human body requires - they are not complete proteins.

Whey Protein Isolate
This is the highest quality protein currently available. The BV rating is often shown at 110-159 because the BV scale was devised before Whey Protein Isolate was developed and the scale is based on the perfect protein of an egg. This form of protein has the highest bioavailability of any other form of protein.

Casein Protein Isolate
Casein is a slow-digesting protein source that actually forms a "gel" in the stomach and slowly releases it's amino acid components over several hours after ingestion. This slow release can last up to 7 hours (for comparison: Whey is released within 40 minutes). Casein is derived from milk - same protein source as if you drink a glass of milk. My concern though with this source is because it is concentrated and process to be slow-digesting, the Casein Protein Isolate may actually leave our altered/shorter digestive track before it has a chance to release all of the amino acids it contains.

And just a side note: The words "enzymatically hydrolyzed" don't really mean much. Enzymatically just means it's a "variety of protein enzyme sources" and hydrolyzed just means that the protein has been "broken down" into it's basic amino acid component.

So basically with those $3.50+ protein bullets you're paying for 68% water and 32% of a low quality combination of protein (with a little bit of good whey protein thrown in for good measure).

I personally would rather feed my body the high quality Whey Protein Isolate that is proven to be the best for my body, will be processed in less than an hour in my shorter intestines and allow me to use every single bit of what I'm drinking and not waste any protein.



EDITED 2/21/10 -- Andrea U. (all around science geek and vitamin/supplement guru) made the following comment about collagen protein.  "Collagen by itself has a PDCAAS score of .08.  I put ProteinEx (a "medical grade collagen" through a PDCAAS filter) and it had a score of 0.25"  NOTE: PDCAAS scores range from 0 to 1.0 with 1.0 being a perfect score (i.e.: whey protein, eggs).  Thanks Andrea!

Protein -- Trying Samples

I had to try about four dozen different flavors/brands of protein before I found two or three that worked for me. Imagine if I had bought big jars of protein powder for those 4 dozen samples. I'd be broke! Thankfully I used single-scoop samples of protein and could quickly eliminate the ones I didn't like.
After surgery our tastes buds change. So the flavors of protein that we liked before surgery we might not like after. That's why it isn't really a good idea to test out protein beforehand. In fact, my taste buds changed twice. During the first two weeks after surgery nothing tasted right ... I later found out it was because of the anesthesia in my system, it can give everything a metallic flavor. Then things mellowed out a bit after 2 weeks. But then at the 2 month mark things changed again .. suddenly stuff that I didn't like the taste of was much better. So be patient with your body and expect things to change along the way.
So where do you get samples? There are online and local resources ... so do some digging to find as many as you can.
ONLINE SOURCES - here's a list of the most common sources for buying variety packs or individual flavors ... getting several different brands and flavors all in one place.

  • Netrition -- They also have a variety pack of samples
  • Bariatric Eating -- Susan Marie sells individual flavors ala carte or a protein starter kit
  • Vitalady -- Michelle sells individual flavors ala carte
  • Nashua Nutrition -- Many different brands available ala carte
INDIVIDUAL MANUFACTURERS - some companies MAY give free samples or offer them for a nominal fee, but you have to contact each brand individually. Here are a few that I know of:
LOCAL SOURCES -- sometimes you just want to have easier access to protein than having to order online. Here are some local sources for getting samples:
  • GNC -- they sell a couple different flavors of their most popular brands. They also sometimes have free samples under the counter, just have to ask.
  • Health Food Stores -- if you've got a large health food store in your area, they may have samples of generic whey or soy protein. Many people say they have found unflavored whey protein in bulk at their health food store.
  • Support Group Members -- ask each member of your support group to bring a scoop of their favorite flavor to share.
  • Body Fortress Protein -- this is the brand I've settled on - not because it is all that much better tasting than anything else - but because it's convenient to pick up at Walmart or Target. And it's cheap. They don't sell samples either. But a whole 2lb jar is only around $15 (about half what others usually run). So I'm listing this here because it's the one big jar of protein that you can buy and try and not be out a lot of money.
So if you are having problems finding a protein powder that tastes good to you, get some samples. And even if a flavor doesn't sound good to you, try it anyway. One of my favorite flavors right after surgery was cookies-n-cream -- which was not something I would have picked pre-op. You never know what will taste good to you after surgery, so try 'em all.

Protein -- Do some research

I want to share some online resources with you regarding protein, protein supplements and why protein is so important to our bodies after WLS. Nearly all the knowlege I've amassed about protein (and everything else related to WLS) has been found on the Internet, in medical journals, through books at the library and in talking to other patients.

I've often said that I have done more research and study about biology, anatomy and nutrition since I had WLS than I ever have in all my years in high school or college. Protein - The Different Types of Supplements

Understanding the different types of protein supplements is essential in choosing the right one for you. Here I go through the main types of protein supplements used by weight loss surgery patients. Yes, there are others... but this basic outline will get you started with what you need to know.

WHEY ISOLATE PROTEIN -- this is the highest quality form of protein powder. All the fat and lactose (sugar) has been removed from the original milk product and you're left with just the protein. When you look at the label you'll see about 25g of protein per "scoop" (usually about 28g) with 0g carb and 0g fat. Because Whey Isolate is the highest quality, you're also going to pay more for it.

WHEY CONCENTRATE PROTEIN -- although still a high quality form of protein powder, it has not been processed down as far as Isolate and you'll find that some fat and carbohydrates still remain in the product. Not much, but still some. Typically you'll see Whey Concentrate containing about 1g-9g of fat and 1g-9g of carb (lactose) per serving. Check the labels carefully to see how the numbers come out... some forms of Concentrate are higher quality than others. Because it's not as high a quality of blend, it's usually priced much cheaper. However, if you are lactose intolerant, you want to stick with Isolate instead.

PROTEIN QUALITY -- Whey Isolate Protein and Whey Concentrate Protein are EXACTLY the same protein. The protein itself has the exact same quality, digestibility, bioavailability, whatever-ability. The PROTEIN is the same. The only difference is that Whey Concentrate has a few extra "things" mixed in with the protein. So don't be fooled by those who say you can only use Whey Isolate Protein. That's a myth. You can use either form - they are exactly the same protein. However, if you have a lactose or fat intolerance, then stick with Isolate.

COMBINED WHEY ISOLATE & CONCENTRATE -- A common way to achieve a high quality protein supplement while still maintaining an economical price point is to use a combination of both Whey Isolate and Concentrate in the mix. Make sure that Isolate is listed first on the ingredient list to ensure you're getting more of the higher quality protein. This is the type of protein I use and each scoop of protein has 1.8g fat and 2g carb.

OTHER GOOD TYPES OF PROTEIN -- some people find that they are actually "whey intolerant" and have to search for other types of protein supplements. There are definitely other options, but the variety is much more limited. Soy protein, rice protein, egg protein -- all these powders can be purchased in the same way as whey protein. I personally haven't tried any of these, but have heard from others that they do not mix as smoothly with liquid as whey, so you have to deal with grittiness and sometimes lumpiness.

PROTEIN TO AVOID – stay away from the types that are low quality proteins and those designed for body builders or people with normal digestive systems. Specifically… collagen protein and hydrolyzed protein and those that do not contain all eight essential amino acids.

Let's talk about protein

Right after RNY surgery our tiny new pouch of a stomach can only hold about 2 ounces of food or full liquids. It is nearly impossible for us to get all of our daily protein needs through food alone -- so we must supplement that little amount of food with additional protein supplements. One of the most common questions or the most common complaint I see on the WLS forums is about protein. Confusion about what kind to use. Confusion about why it tastes so horrible. Confusion about recipes and how to prepare shakes. Lots of questions. And I answer as many questions as I can. But for those of you who know me, I tend to be lazy. I like to write stuff once and just refer back to that information over and over again. Ya know... copy and paste! It seems like I've been typing a lot about protein lately, so I'm going to evoke my right to be lazy and write a bunch of stuff here on my blog that I can later use in my copy/paste escapades. I'd like to do a short series of posts here on my blog about protein.

How Much Protein?


After WLS we are instructed to follow a high-protein, low-carb, good-fat diet. We're given a range of 60g to 80g of protein intake per day. But how did they come up with that number and is it right for every person?


And most importantly... what happens if we eat too much protein?


Let's so some digging into the protein needs of both "Normies" and "Posties". (Normal digestive folks and post-op WLS folks.) Obviously a Postie will need extra protein to compensate for the rapid weight loss and malabsorption of food and nutrients in an altered digestive system.


Here are the various recommendations for protein intake from health organizations around the world. (Calculations are based on *MY* ideal weight of 135.)


U.S. RDA - Recommended Daily Allowance (same as UK's RDA)

.8g of protein per 1kg of ideal body weight per day

(Equal to 49g protein intake)


World Health Organization (WHO)

.45g or protein per 1kg of ideal body weight per day

(Equal to 24g protein intake)


National Academies' Institue of Medicine

10% to 35%* of 2000-calorie/day diet should come from protein

(Equal to 50g to 175g protein intake)

*35% as the upper limit is currently being challenged by other organizations


Typical WLS Program Recommendation

20% to 35% of 1,200-calorie/day diet should come from protein

(Equal to 60g to 105g protein intake)



Can I eat too much protein?

Yes! And the consequences are not pretty, either. Here's a few things to remember:


  • Protein sources have a high nitrogen level. Nitrogen is broken down in the liver and a biproduct of that process is is ammonia. Ammonia is poisonous and can be harmful to cells in the body.

  • Stress on the kidneys can occur when the body has to process more than 2g of protein per kg of ideal body weight. (Which translates to 122g for my body.)

  • High protein levels can decrease Vitamin B6 levels and cause deficiency.

  • Increased calcium excretion has been associated with high intakes of protein from animal sources - leading to osteoporosis.

  • Excess protein is converted to blood glucose in the body. Excess blood glucose is stored as fat. (Remember that the body also gets blood glucose from any carbs we eat, which is plenty of fuel for the body.)

But what about all the extra exercise I'm doing?
Studies have shown that professional athletes who do extreme strength training need only about a 50% increase in their protein intake. So for a 150lb man who is an avid body builder his normal need would be 54g of protein intake per day. Increase that by 50% and he'd only need 81g of protein.


Yeah, yeah, yeah.... that's not what THEY will tell you or what they even want to hear. They will say they need "1g of protein pre pound of current body weight." But I ask them to please check out that list I just wrote above about the risk factors for taking in excess protein. I really don't want to enter myself into that huge fight... so that's all I'm saying on that topic. LOL!
