Protein Hot Chai Mix

So I got home this evening and my furnace is out.... again! It's the ignition, like it is every winter. Talked to the repair guy and he was willing to come out tonight. But after talking to him and deciding that I want to upgrade to a better type of igniter, he needs to buy one tomorrow when the supply company opens.

So tonight I'm bundled up with the space heaters on. I got home at it was 54-degrees in the house. It's warmed up to 58.
Since I'm cold, I decided to make a cup of hot tea. Then I remembered I had just read a recipe for making a hot chai tea mix. I modified it to make it protein chai tea. It's pretty darned delicious!

Protein Hot Chai Mix
3/4 cup Splenda
1t. cinnamon
1t. ground ginger
1t. ground cloves
1t. cardamon (I don't usually use this)

Mix all dry ingredients in bowl until well blended. Add 1/2 cup of mixture to mug and add either splash of cold milk or water -- stir to create smooth paste (so you don't get lumpy protein powder). Add 8oz hot water and mix well. You can top with Light Redi Whip and a sprinkle of chai spice or drink it naked. (The drink is naked, not you.)

Recipe makes 7 half-cup servings. Calculation below is without the "splash of milk" when you're mixing the tea. If you use RediWhip -- it adds about 20 calories.

Fat: 1g

Protein: 27g

  5. I love this recipe. But I'cw found that if I use half the milk called for and half of a SF French Vanilla creamer, it seems to mix better. Not idea why, but it does. Thanks for sharing all your recipes, I love 'em but this one is my favorite thus far.

  7. So if I ended up with a layer of small protein curdle/lumps in my hot drink did I not make my paste well enough?

  8. @ducksncrackers (love the name, btw!) -- ahhh, the sludge! Yep, this is normal. I think it's some type of sedement from the tea and spice mixture. There's a couple ways to avoid this. 1)drink it with a spoon and keep the tea stirred. 2) make it in the blender instead.

To make it in the blender just add the tea mixture to the blender jar along with a splash of water. Leave the lid off the blender and turn it on low and let it whirl for a moment. Then while it's still going, add the hot water until you have enough to make your mug of tea. You'll get a layer of foam on top (a result of the powdered milk) - I just hold a spatula over the foam when I pour the tea into my mug so I get all tea and no foam (it's a Starbucks trick).

Someone also recently discovered that if you put the dry powder mixture through the food processor after you have the whole batch mixed, the sludge issue is greatly decreased too. Doing this will make the tea mixture more powdery and fine so you'll need less than 1/2c for each serving.

  10. Haha, made the mistake today of adding coffee to my mixture instead of a tea bag. We Cdns don't always have access to powdered tea.
Not quite as soothing, but pleasant on it's own level.

  11. Pam, when you have a chance....when you say "6 scoops vanilla protein powder" approximately how large are your scoops? I have these little scoops that measure about 1 Tablespoon - I know some proteins have larger scoops....

    Thanks!

  12. @chcheon -- I use Body Fortress protein powder (the stuff from Walmart). The scoop is 33g in weight or about 1/4c in volume. My scoop is 26g protein. The recipe calls for 6 scoops - or about 155g protein. So you can adjust the recipe according to the type of protein you use.

I've also heard of some people making the recipe as is but omitting the protein powder, then adding that when you make it so you can adjust at the time how much you want to add.

  13. I want to thank you for this recipe! It has helped me so much! I have actually lost too much weight and when I just saw the dietitian at the Hurley Bariatric Center she was certain my protein levels would be way low, but they were good. I told her part of the reason was that even if I didn't eat right, for the last few months every morning I drink a protein hot chai. So I have you to thank for my good levels. I love this drink and like I said it has saved my health and I want to give you a big THANK YOU!!!
